Sugar Spike Off

Nu Chapter’s primary philanthropy event is Sugar Spike Off, the University of Miami’s largest university-wide volleyball tournament. Every year, as we watch staff, students, and community members enjoy themselves, we can’t help but become even more inspired to work our hardest to further the mission of our and philanthropy. The event is geared towards uniting our diverse campus for one common cause: spreading awareness about juvenile diabetes. A disease that strikes children suddenly and makes them insulin-dependent for life, juvenile diabetes (type I) carries the constant threat of devastating complications.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the leading charitable funder and advocate of juvenile diabetes research worldwide, was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with the disease. Since its inception, JDRF has provided more than $800 million in direct funding to diabetes research; more than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education. JDRF’s mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

Nationally, Delta Epsilon Psi Fraternity Inc. is dedicated to supporting JDRF’s cause. For the past several years, Delta Epsilon Psi has donated thousands of dollars to JDRF by conducting fundraiser events such as Sugar-Free Bowl (flag football tournament) and Diabetes Awareness Week. And here at the University of Miami, our chapter plans to continue efforts to find a cure for juvenile diabetes with yearly signature service events.
